Telehealth Consent

How telehealth works at RCC, including its benefits, its limits, and your responsibilities.

Effective date: August 4, 2026 · Reviewed at least annually · Status: Approved.

What telehealth is

Telehealth uses electronic communications to provide assessment, consultation, treatment, monitoring, education, and related health services while the patient and clinician are in different locations. Telehealth is not ordinary email or fax.

How RCC uses telehealth

RCC may use an approved secure platform for clinically appropriate follow-up and other services. At each encounter, RCC will verify identity, document the patient’s physical location, confirm consent, and document the service to the same standard applicable to in-person care. The Provider decides whether telehealth is clinically and legally appropriate and may require an in-person examination, testing, referral, or emergency care.

Potential benefits

  • Improved access and convenience.
  • Timely follow-up and review of symptoms, medications, or laboratory results.
  • Reduced travel when an in-person examination is not necessary.

Material risks and limitations

  • Technology may fail, be delayed, or be interrupted; audio or video quality may limit assessment.
  • Electronic communications carry privacy and security risks despite reasonable safeguards.
  • A remote examination may not reveal information available through an in-person examination.
  • Misidentification, incomplete information, or the presence of another person may affect privacy or care.
  • Telehealth may not be appropriate for emergencies or every condition, and no diagnosis, treatment, refill, or prescription is guaranteed.

Patient responsibilities

  • Be physically located in an authorized service jurisdiction throughout the visit and accurately provide the current location and a callback number.
  • Use a reasonably private setting and secure connection; identify every person present; do not record the visit unless everyone expressly agrees.
  • Provide complete and accurate medical, medication, allergy, pregnancy, laboratory, and symptom information.
  • Follow emergency directions and seek in-person care when advised. Do not use portal or telehealth messages for emergencies.

Prescriptions and alternatives

Florida’s standard of care applies. Controlled-substance prescriptions are subject to additional federal and Florida requirements and may require an in-person evaluation. Alternatives include an in-person RCC visit, another qualified provider, urgent care, or an emergency department, depending on need.

Consent and withdrawal

Participation is voluntary. The patient may ask questions or withdraw consent prospectively at any time, but withdrawal does not undo care already provided or charges already incurred. Withdrawal may mean the patient must use in-person care. Telehealth consent is confirmed during intake before an RCC telehealth encounter.
